“In the land of play, we make connections we wouldn’t normally make. We see things in new ways. Play can boost our creativity, heighten our mood, make us laugh, and can engage us in the world in ways that regular “adult” life doesn’t.”
Amen! I totally agree with this quote from the article 10 Ways to Make Your Life More Playful, by Melissa Kirk. When we become adults, taking on the responsibilities of adults, we begin to think and act as if it is un-adult-like to be silly and playful. Play takes on many forms. We can play alone, with friends or with people we just met. Play can be spontaneous or planned. Here is an example of an impromptu evening of play.
My family and I went to a local pizza restaurant. The restaurant has several television screens and one was showing the television show Family Feud. A family was sitting in the booth behind us was watching the show as well. We all began playing Family Feud together providing answers and laughing at the ridiculous answers the real participants gave. It was a fun few minutes.
As I think about this encounter now, it reminds me of children who meet on a playground and play for a few minutes. They may never see each other again, but the time together was big fun.
We should take time to play. It will release tension and boost mood. Create a list of your own and plan to play more in this year.
