I had to answer that question honestly after years of getting my butt kicked by overwhelming stress. It is a question that most of us have to answer with honesty if we are to ever turn the tables on stress and kick the “S” out of it.
Having to carry or shoulder major responsibilities that compound can cause you to feel overwhelmed. I describe this in the guide Stress is Personal: Your Personal Starter Guide to Stress Relief. The following is quoted from the starter guide.
“We are very aware of pressures from life situations. Unfortunately, we cannot always remove them or fix them right away. We carry the added pressure until the situations are resolved. Life rarely waits for the resolution of one problem before another arises.”
You can take the first step to relieve overwhelming stress by re-establishing your priorities. Re-establish Your Priorities is the first step in the R.E.S.T. System of Stress Relief. The R.E.S.T. System of Stress Relief is a simple process that I developed and use to relieve overwhelming stress.
So, let’s talk about priorities. Generally speaking, when we speak of priorities, we usually assess them by asking the question “what is important to me?” In the R.E.S.T. System, the first question to ask is “will this activity or action affect whether I live or survive?” This may sound like a harsh question, but it is based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and is primary to what initiates the stress response.
According to Maslow, physical survival takes precedence over anything else. We are wired for survival. That is the purpose of the stress response. The stress response immediately prepares the body to fight, flee or freeze. It prepares us to take actions that save the physical self.
Survival of the physical self requires the ability to breathe, food to eat, water to drink, intimacy, sleep, balance and cleansing. Sleep is vital to physical survival and functioning. We will talk about sleep when we address the third step in the R.E.S.T System of Stress Relief.
Yes, there are more questions, we just start with this one first.
