In a previous blog post I shared an article written by featured guest Angela Berry. The article is entitled Easy, Tasty Energizing “Pick-Me-Up” Afternoon Snacks. Afternoon at work poses a dilemma to workers. We are bored, tired, and stressed. Many of us try to eat our way out of these feelings by snacking. The snacks that are available in vending machines are high in sugar, fat or sodium. Ms. Berry suggests that we make try easy to make snacks that are nutritious and satisfying like no-bake granola bars.
I also have some easy snacks to get you revved up in the afternoon. Mindfully choose snacks so that you are eating to satisfy hunger. As previously stated, we often snack in the afternoon to alleviate an uncomfortable emotion or feeling. High stress positions contribute to high stress eating. Also choose snacks that give you energy and increase your ability to think.
Choose snacks containing superfoods that support your health. Use the following vitamin and antioxidant rich ingredients in to make your own granola bars or trail mix. Start with dark chocolate a superfood that lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, and boosts energy. Pair it with Brazil nuts that are known to stabilize mood and decrease anxiety. You might also like to add a handful of almonds which promote relaxation. Throw in some cranberries that are known to reduce stress causing damage to the body and mind.
If this sounds too complicated, eat a banana. Bananas lift mood, increase energy and promote a sense of calm.
I love to make my own smoothie. I combine fresh and frozen tropical fruit chunks, spinach or kale, protein powder, and almond milk. I enjoy peach smoothies and my absolute favorite smoothie is strawberry/banana. Perhaps your office can pool together to purchase a blender or smoothie maker for everyone to enjoy.
A book that has helped me to make better stay calm food choices is Eat Yourself Calm: Ingredients & Recipes to Reduce the Stress in Your Life by Gill Paul. I have also enjoyed my Magic Bullet Blender. It is easy to use and easy to clean.
Share your stress busting, calm encouraging, tasty snacks and recipes so that we can all enjoy.
