Owning a home is over rated. It takes more time, money and effort to maintain than one would think. We have a leaky roof. Although we have called in roofers, repairmen and our neighbors, no one has found the source of the leak. Of course I am using a leaky roof as a metaphor for stress management. Stress is like rain. It can pour or it can drizzle.
When stress is like a drizzle, we may not even notice its effects. The roof may get damp, but it does not affect us on the inside. However, when rain comes down in torrents, the leak in the roof cannot prevent the rain from coming into the house. The result is damage to the inside that is both structural and cosmetic.
Nevertheless, I have learned that there are three actions to take when your roof leaks or stress becomes overwhelming.
One
Grab a towel or a bucket. Prevent or limit the damage to other parts of your house. In other words, use techniques to release stress and manage its negative effects.
Two
Talk to someone who can provide practical ideas for finding and repairing the leak. Accept the fact that your friends and family may not be able to help you. Therefore choose a professional who understands and can address your specific needs.
Three
Do not give up until you find the leak. Sometimes you have to think outside of the box. This means you may have to try something new.
