At one time, I felt so broken that I believed pieces of my very being could scatter in the wind like dust. I felt crushed. I know that I am not alone, there is a lot of brokenness and broken people. Broken hearts, broken promises, broken spirits, broken peace, broken commitments, and broken dreams compound clouding the ability to see where the pieces fit together.
Brokenness is fixed from the inside. It is just like healing a cut. A cut begins to heal on the inside. A scab forms to protect the cut while healing takes place. The scab is rough, hard and ugly. Once the cut is completely healed, the scab begins to peel off in sections, exposing new skin. The pain of the initial cut, the tenderness of the healing wound and the ugly scab are gone. Sometimes there is a scar that becomes less noticeable over time.
What happens when the cut does not heal properly? A scab may form, but the wound may remain open underneath. The wound is more prone to repeated re-injury. Infection may set in and cause the entire body to become sick.
Brokenness is an emotional wound that causes us to feel a range of emotions including sadness, anxiety, or anger. Brokenness heightens overwhelming stress. The emotional scab is demonstrated by the defense mechanisms we use to protect our perceived fragility. If we do not heal from the inside, we risk a lifetime of unhappiness.
Brokenness is one source of self-defeating behaviors and insecurities. It hinders our ability to engage in healthy relationships. Brokenness causes us to be miserable and to stay miserable. I found that when I did four things, I was able to heal from the inside. The stress I felt motivated me and did not overwhelm me. These four actions are the basis of my R.E.S.T. System of Stress Relief.
We are going to talk about the actions you can take to do the following:
Re-establish your priorities – develop and commit to your own personal mission for healing.
Enlist help or support – enlist the help or support of a trained professional.
Sleep – well rested bodies encourage emotional healing and diffuse overwhelming stress
Take your time – mindful practices contribute to non-judgmental self-awareness and self-acceptance.
