Physical exercise is an excellent way to relieve tension in the body. When we are stressed or feel threatened the fight or flight response is triggered. This immediate response releases energy to our legs and arms. They become tense preparing us to run like hell or fight like our lives depended on it.
This response is good if we are facing a physical threat and need to get out of harm’s way immediately. I was chased by a dog while doing a home visit and had to dive into my car. I ran like I was 16 years old and on my high school track team again. I did not think or hesitate, my body seemed to know what to do.
In a work setting, we experience mental and emotional threats throughout the day. These threats are referred to as perceived threats and they trigger the same physical fight or flight response.
An example of this type of response is when we think someone does not like us. This could be a supervisor or a co-worker. The feeling we get makes us angry, frustrated, or fearful. All of these feelings trigger the physical fight or flight response. When we are reprimanded by a supervisor, the reprimand may make us feel embarrassed, foolish or incompetent. These feelings will trigger the fight or flight response as well.
We need to take physical action in order to fully and completely relieve the tension. Movement is so important. We do not have the luxury of leaving work to go for a walk or run each time we feel stressed.
I know that it is difficult to get to a gym to work out, especially if you work more than one job, have a family or are in school. It is difficult for me. Over the years, I have joined fitness centers, taken classes and paid for 24 hour access to fitness equipment. The result for me was the same. I wasted my money because I never seemed to have the time.
I have also tried walking, riding my bike and running on my home treadmill before or after work. No money wasted, just difficult to find the time or desire to get up at 4 am. I needed a reasonable way to relieve my stress using exercise. So, that is when I contacted Crystal Winfrey-Ellington.
Ms. Winfrey-Ellington is a Certified Fitness Trainer and Owner of 4Star Fitness. My challenge to her was to show me simple, effective exercises that I could do in a small space in 30 minutes or less. That is what HappyHalfHour.Club is about. We provide tips to relieve stress that can be accomplished in 30 minutes or less.
My request was not a challenge for Crystal who put together an exclusive video demonstration. I love this video because it is real just as if I were in her basement trying to work out. I am challenging you to use her suggestions and let me know how they work for you. Read below or go to my Connect with Me Page to learn how to connect and share your comments.
