Hi there. It’s Marcyline. I wanted to jump on and tell you a little something. Before I go into my exercise class today about the hit, the weights and work workout a little bit for about 30 minutes, but I wanted to share something with you today. That is really, that really came from our livestream podcast that we did on Sunday, entitled Give to Yourself What You Give to Others. That’s the title of the podcast. And what I wanted to share with you is a quote that I used. The quote is from Frederick Buechner, who is a Presbyterian pastor and an author. And it’s about compassion. The quote is this “compassion is the sometimes fatal capacity for feeling what it is like to live inside somebody else’s skin. It’s the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy.”

Finally, for you too, this is such a profound quote to me because it’s not just about walking in somebody else’s shoes. You know, we talk about that. Often we talk about, you know, just walk a mile in my shoes. It’s not the same. It’s actually living in somebody else’s skin. Frederick. Buechner said that if you want to extend compassion, true compassion to someone else, you need to recognize and have a complete understanding of what it’s like to be in their skin, in their skin.

What that means is you can’t change what you look like. You can’t change the circumstances, you can’t change the environment. You are totally immersed in the total experiences of that person. You are totally immersed in what that person feels on a day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute sense, total and complete immersion. And once you’re able to do that, you can extend compassion to that person. However, it’s with the recognition that until you have peace and joy, I cannot have peace and joy. That is Frederick beak, nurse definition of compassion. And I wanted to share that with you, because that was a big part of our discussion on Sunday. What is compassion?

Having said that it is very easy for us to extend compassion to other people, maybe not to the extent that nurse speaks of. So, I think that is a very clear and profound definition, but it’s easy for us to extend compassion to others. We need to learn to extend compassion to ourselves. And that’s what we’re talking about on stress talk live this month self-compassion and how to extend it and demonstrated to ourselves when we are in need. When we believe we have failed, when we believe we’ve made mistakes, extending ourselves a little self-compassion. I hope to see you on Sunday 4:00 PM. That’s when we go live on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube on Marcyline Bailey as always take good care.

I explored one definition in this short video. Watch Give to Yourself What You Give to Others to learn more.
