I read an inspiring Message from Dr. Rory Truell, the Secretary General of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW,) dated December 30, 2017. The IFSW’s What We do page states “The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) is a global organization striving for social justice, human rights and social development through the promotion of social work, best practice models and the facilitation of international cooperation.”
Dr. Truell’s message touches on the polarization that communities around the world currently experience. He also shares successful community initiatives that were strengthened due to contributions by the social work profession. He stated that the social work profession is “a profession that is not just responding to the pain and hardship of people but also facilitating and shaping extraordinary social outcomes.”
Social workers and those who provide services to people often feel as marginalized as the population they serve. We have experienced cut backs in funding for services to those in need. We have also seen social welfare programs come under attack as being ineffective, inefficient or inaccessible. Programs are tied to funding decisions by politicians. They are also often the first to experience budget cuts or cuts in personnel. With limited resources, programs have limited ability to adequately address foundational concerns. Compounding the problem is the use of antiquated systems, equipment and service delivery models.
Now, more than ever, social workers need to build coalitions and facilitate cooperative ventures to advance common sense social welfare policies. We need to use best practices and strategic partnerships to deliver long-lasting, beneficial results. We also need to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in social services and social welfare programming.
